What Is Olaplex and Do You Actually Need It?

If you've been in a salon chair in the last several years, you've heard of Olaplex. It's become one of the most talked-about products in the hair industry — and also one of the most misunderstood. Some clients think it's a miracle cure. Others think it's overhyped. The truth is somewhere in the middle, and it really depends on your hair.

Here's what your Canton stylists at Welcome & Wanted actually think about bond-building treatments — including when we recommend them and when we don't.

What Olaplex Actually Does

Olaplex is a bond-building treatment. During chemical services — bleaching, coloring, heat styling — the disulfide bonds in your hair (the ones that give it strength and structure) get broken down. Olaplex works by seeking out those broken bonds and reconnecting them, restoring some of your hair's internal integrity.

It does not add moisture. It does not repair split ends. It does not replace conditioning. It specifically addresses bond damage — which is a real and distinct type of damage that conditioning alone can't fix.

Who Actually Needs It

Bond-building treatments are genuinely beneficial for:

  • Anyone who regularly bleaches or lightens their hair

  • Clients who do multiple chemical services in a single appointment (color + highlights, for example)

  • Hair that feels gummy, mushy, or elastic when wet — this is a sign of severe bond damage

  • People who heat style daily without heat protectant

  • Anyone doing a color correction or significant chemical change

Who Probably Doesn't Need It

If your hair is healthy, you do minimal chemical processing, and you take good care of it with quality products — a bond treatment is nice but not essential. You're not doing harm by skipping it. Your money might be better spent on a Davines moisturizing treatment or a gloss.

We say this because we'd rather give you honest advice than upsell you on something your hair doesn't need.

Olaplex vs. Davines Bond-Building Options

At Welcome & Wanted, we use Davines products — including their SU Sun Care line and treatments from the Circle Chronicles collection. Davines offers bond-building and strengthening treatments that we find perform beautifully alongside our color services and work exceptionally well for our clients in the Georgia climate.

Both Olaplex and Davines have excellent bond care options. Our stylists will recommend what makes the most sense for your hair specifically — not a brand loyalty choice.

Can You Add It to Any Service?

Yes. A bond-building treatment can be added to a color service, a bleach service, or even as a standalone treatment appointment. If you're doing any kind of chemical work, adding a bond treatment to the service is always worth discussing with your stylist. The difference in hair feel and longevity of the color result is often noticeable.

The Bottom Line

Bond-building treatments are real science, not marketing hype — but they're also not for everyone equally. The best way to know if your hair would benefit is to have an honest conversation with your stylist. At your next appointment, ask us to look at your hair's current condition and tell you what would actually help. We'll give you a straight answer.
