What Happens to Your Extensions in the Fall: Seasonal Care Guide

Summer extension care is all about chlorine, UV, and sweat. Fall brings different challenges — indoor heat, dry air, more frequent heat styling, and the temptation to skip washes because you're not sweating as much. Here's your seasonal care reset for autumn.

What Changes in Fall

Indoor Heat = Dryness

As you run the heat in your home and spend more time in heated spaces, the air gets significantly drier. Extension hair doesn't produce its own oils, so it's more vulnerable to dryness than your natural hair. You'll notice this in the ends of the wefts — they may start feeling slightly coarser or looking less glossy. Combat this with a Davines OI Oil application 2-3 times per week on the mid-lengths and ends.

Washing Frequency

Many clients naturally wash less in fall since they're sweating less. This is generally fine for extensions — 2x per week is still ideal. But don't drop to once a week without adjusting your scalp care routine, as buildup around the rows or bonds can cause itching and tangling.

Heat Styling

Fall means more blowouts, more flat iron, more curling. Every single use of heat requires a heat protectant — on your natural hair AND the extension wefts. Extension hair has no protective oils and heat damage is permanent on extension strands.

What Stays the Same

  • Maintenance appointments every 6-8 weeks — non-negotiable regardless of season

  • Sulfate-free shampoo only

  • Sleeping with hair in a loose braid to prevent tangling

  • Wide-tooth comb or extension brush, working from ends up

Fall Is a Great Time to Install

If you've been on the fence about extensions, fall is actually an ideal season to install. You're past the swimming season, you're heading into months of beautiful fall and holiday styling opportunities, and extensions photograph gorgeously against autumn backdrops. Book your consultation now.
