How Many Rows of Extensions Do You Actually Need?

One of the most common questions during extension consultations is: how many rows do I need? And the honest answer is: it depends on your hair and your goal. Here's how we think about it at Welcome & Wanted — and what each row actually adds.

What a Row Does
Each row of hand-tied weft extensions adds a horizontal layer of hair across a section of your head. The weft sits along the row and fans out below it — adding both thickness and length below that point. More rows = more coverage = more volume and fullness throughout the entire length of your hair.
The General Framework
1 row: adds length and subtle volume at the perimeter. Best for clients who already have good density and just want a little more length or a small amount of added fullness at the nape.
2 rows: the most common starting point. Adds visible volume throughout the mid-section and nape, and creates noticeable length. Works well for most clients.
3 rows: significant transformation. Full, lush volume from roots to ends. Great for clients with finer or thinner hair who want a dramatic result.
4+ rows: maximum density and volume. Typically for clients with very fine or thin hair who want the most dramatic possible result, or clients going for extreme length.
What We Assess During Consultation
Your natural hair density — thick, medium, or fine
Your desired result — subtle vs. dramatic
Where you want the volume to show most (at the nape, mid-length, throughout?)
Whether extensions need to be hidden or can be visible (affects high row placement)
Why More Isn't Always Better
More rows means more weight on your natural hair. For fine hair, starting with 2 well-placed rows is often better than jumping to 4 — we can always add more at your next maintenance. We always recommend the minimum rows needed to achieve your goal, not the maximum.
