How to Care for Your Extensions in the Summer Heat
You've invested in extensions — now let's make sure they last all summer. Whether you have hand-tied wefts, tape-ins, or another method, Georgia summers require a few specific adjustments to your routine. Miss these steps and you'll be back in the chair for a full reinstall sooner than expected.
This is the actual care routine our extension clients at Welcome & Wanted follow. Keep it and your extensions will thank you.

The Summer Extension Routine
Washing: 2x Per Week Max
Over-washing is the number one mistake extension clients make in summer. Sweat and chlorine make you want to wash more — but washing too frequently strips the extension wefts of moisture and loosens the bond on tape-ins. Twice a week is the sweet spot. Use a sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo and focus on the scalp, not the wefts.
The Pre-Swim Protocol
Before every pool or ocean swim:
• Saturate your hair with fresh water first — wet hair absorbs less chlorine/salt than dry hair
• Apply a thin coat of hair oil (Davines OI Oil works beautifully) from mid-shaft to ends
• Braid into a loose low braid or bun to reduce tangling
After swimming, rinse immediately with fresh water. Don't let chlorine or salt sit in your hair — it dries the wefts and can loosen adhesive on tape-ins.
Drying: Always Fully, Never Rough
Going to bed with damp extensions causes matting at the weft — and once extension hair mats, it's very difficult to reverse. Always dry your hair fully before sleeping, either with a blow dryer on medium heat or by giving yourself enough time to air dry completely. Sleep with hair in a loose braid to prevent overnight tangling.
Heat Styling
You can use heat on extension hair — but use a heat protectant every single time. Extension hair doesn't have oil glands the way your natural hair does, so it can't self-repair. It relies entirely on the products you use to stay healthy. Davines Circle Chronicles — specifically the This Is a Heat Shield Spray — is our go-to recommendation for extension clients.
Products That Extend the Life of Your Extensions
• Sulfate-free shampoo — non-negotiable. Sulfates dissolve the bonds and dry the wefts.
• Lightweight leave-in conditioner — hydrates the wefts without weighing them down
• Hair oil (OI Oil or similar) — for pre-swim protection and daily shine
• Wide-tooth comb or extension brush — never brush from root to tip; always start at the ends and work up
• Silk pillowcase — reduces friction and overnight tangling significantly
When to Come Back for Maintenance
Hand-tied extensions need a maintenance appointment every 6-8 weeks as your natural hair grows. Do not push this. When the rows move too far from the scalp, the weight distribution shifts and can cause breakage. If you're swimming frequently, we may recommend coming in closer to the 6-week mark.
Tape-ins typically need reinstallation every 4-6 weeks. Heat and humidity can slightly accelerate tape loosening, so be mindful if you're spending a lot of time outdoors.
Questions? Your Stylist Is Your Resource
Every extension client at Welcome & Wanted gets specific care guidance based on their extension type and lifestyle. If you're unsure about something — swimming with your specific extensions, a product you want to try, whether something looks right — reach out before your maintenance appointment. We'd rather answer a quick question than fix a problem at your next visit.
