Hand-Tied Extensions in Summer: What You Need to Know

Summer and extensions might sound like a complicated combination — heat, sweat, pool water, humidity. But here's the truth: hand-tied weft extensions are one of the most wearable luxury hair services you can have installed, even in a Georgia summer. The key is knowing what you're getting into and how to care for them properly.

At Welcome & Wanted Hair Bar in Canton, hand-tied extensions are one of our most requested premium services. Here's everything you need to know before booking.

Why Hand-Tied Extensions Are Different

Not all extensions are built the same. Hand-tied weft extensions are sewn onto small beaded rows that lie flat against the scalp — no glue, no heat, no harsh chemicals involved in the installation. The result is a lightweight, natural-feeling extension that moves and behaves like your real hair.

Compared to tape-ins or clip-ins, hand-tied extensions offer:

Longer wear — typically 6-8 weeks between maintenance appointments

More versatility — you can put your hair up, swim (with precautions), and style normally

Less damage — the beaded row method distributes weight evenly across the wefts

A more natural look — especially for volume and length at the same time

Is Summer a Good Time to Install Extensions?

Yes — with a few considerations. Summer is actually a popular time for new installs because clients want longer, fuller hair for vacation photos, outdoor events, and weddings. The heat doesn't damage the extension method itself. What you need to manage is moisture and maintenance.

We recommend installing at least 2-3 weeks before a major trip or event so you have time to adjust to the maintenance routine and make sure the color blend is perfect.

Summer Care for Hand-Tied Extensions

Swimming

You can swim — but protection matters. Before getting in any pool or ocean, braid your hair into a low braid and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to create a barrier. Chlorine is drying for both your natural hair and the extension wefts. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after swimming, and never let your hair air dry in salt or chlorine without rinsing first.

Heat and Sweat

Sweat itself won't damage your extensions — but buildup at the bead row can. We recommend washing your scalp (not just your ends) 1-2 times per week with a sulfate-free shampoo, and being thorough around the bead rows. A good scalp brush helps.

Products to Use (and Avoid)

Use: sulfate-free shampoo, lightweight leave-in conditioner, Davines OI Oil on the wefts

Avoid: heavy oils applied at the root, dry shampoo directly on the bead rows, any product with alcohol near the wefts

The Investment
