Georgia summers are gorgeous—but tough on hair. Sun, pool chlorine, and beach salt can
wreak havoc on your color and condition. At Welcome & Wanted Hair Bar in Canton, we're
sharing our best tips for keeping your hair protected all summer.

The Sun: Your Color's Enemy
UV rays don't just damage your skin—they fade and change your hair color too.
What happens:
●Blonde gets brassy or yellow
●Brunette turns reddish or orange
●Vivid colors fade dramatically
●All colors lose vibrancy
Protection strategies:
●Wear a hat during extended sun exposure
●Use UV-protecting products (leave-in sprays with UV filters)
●Avoid peak sun hours (10am-4pm) for hair exposure
●Rinse hair if you've been sweating in the sun
Chlorine: The Pool Problem
Chlorine strips hair of natural oils and can cause serious damage, especially to color-treated or lightened hair.
What happens:
●Blonde can turn greenish (from copper in pool water, not chlorine itself)
●Color fades faster
●Hair becomes dry and brittle
●Extensions can tangle and mat
Protection strategies:
●Wet hair with clean water first (saturated hair absorbs less pool water)
●Apply leave-in conditioner or oil before swimming
●Wear a swim cap for serious protection
●Rinse immediately after swimming
●Use a clarifying shampoo weekly (but only weekly—it's stripping)
●Deep condition within 24 hours of swimming
For blonde hair: Use a purple shampoo after pool exposure to counteract any green tones.
Salt Water: Beach Hair Struggles
Ocean salt is drying and can rough up your hair cuticle.
What happens:
●Hair becomes dry and tangly
●Color fades
●Texture gets rough
●Extensions can mat
Protection strategies:
●Same as chlorine: wet first, apply leave-in, rinse after
●Braid hair before ocean swimming
●Don't let salt water dry in your hair—rinse as soon as possible
●Deep condition after beach days
Extensions and Summer
Extensions need extra summer care:
●Never skip the pre-swim routine (wet, condition, braid)
●Always rinse immediately after swimming
●Brush more frequently during summer months
●Consider protective styles (braids) for water activities
●Don't skip move-ups because you're busy
Summer Haircare Routine Adjustments
Add:
●Weekly deep conditioning mask
●UV-protecting leave-in
●Clarifying shampoo (weekly, not daily)
Reduce:
●Heat styling when possible (embrace summer texture!)
●Washing frequency if possible (dry shampoo helps)
