How Often Should You Really Get Your Hair Colored?

"How often should I come back?" is one of the most common questions we answer at Welcome & Wanted Hair Bar. The answer depends entirely on what color service you're getting. Here's your guide.

Root Retouch (Gray Coverage): Every 4-6 Weeks
Gray coverage grows out the most noticeably because you're covering a distinct color
difference. Most clients need touch-ups:
●Fast growers: Every 4 weeks
●Slower growers: Every 5-6 weeks
●High gray percentage: More frequently (every 3-4 weeks)
Stretch it: Root concealer products can help you push appointments by a week or two.
All-Over Color (Single Process): Every 6-8 Weeks
If you're doing a single-process color for overall richness or tone (not gray coverage), you have more flexibility:
●Minimal root contrast: Every 8 weeks
●Noticeable root contrast: Every 6 weeks
●Vivid or fashion colors: Every 4-6 weeks (they fade faster)
●Highlights: Every 6-10 Weeks
Traditional foil highlights need touch-ups as your roots grow in:
●Blonde with dark roots: Every 6-8 weeks
●Subtle highlights on similar base: Every 8-10 weeks
●Face frame only: Every 8-10 weeks
Note: Highlights create a more obvious line of demarcation than balayage.
Balayage: Every 10-16 Weeks
This is where balayage shines—literally designed for low maintenance:
●Most clients: Every 12-14 weeks for lightening refresh
●Low contrast: Every 14-16 weeks
●High contrast: Every 10-12 weeks
Between lightening appointments, you may want a gloss every 6-8 weeks to maintain tone.
Gloss/Toner Only: Every 4-8 Weeks
If you just need tone refreshed (not new lightening):
●Blonde maintaining cool tone: Every 4-6 weeks
●Brunette refreshing richness: Every 6-8 weeks
●Between color appointments: As needed
Glosses fade gradually, so you have flexibility.
Vivid/Fashion Colors: Every 4-6 Weeks
Vivid colors fade fast regardless of care:
●Most vivid colors: Noticeable fading by 4 weeks
●Blues/greens: Often last longer (6+ weeks)
●Pinks/reds: Fade faster (4 weeks)
Some clients embrace the fade; others refresh frequently.
Factors That Affect Your Schedule
●How fast your hair grows
●How much contrast between root and ends
●Your maintenance products
●Sun/chlorine exposure
●Your personal tolerance for grow-out
