Are You a Good Candidate for Hair Extensions? An Honest Guide
One of the things we're most committed to at Welcome & Wanted is honesty — especially when it comes to extensions. Extensions are a significant investment and
installing them on hair that isn't ready is something we won't do, even if a client really wants them.
So here's the real breakdown: what makes someone a great extension candidate, what might mean you need to wait, and what you can do to get there.

Signs You're a Great Candidate
Healthy hair with good tensile strength: your hair doesn't break easily when stretched gently when wet
Adequate density: you have enough natural hair to conceal the bonds or weft rows
No active chemical relaxer or texturizer: most extension methods don't play well with chemically relaxed hair
Realistic expectations: you understand extensions require maintenance every 6-8 weeks and a home care routine
Budget for maintenance: extensions aren't a one-time cost — the ongoing appointments are part of the investment
Signs You May Need to Wait (and What to Do)
Significant breakage or damage
If your hair is breaking, snapping at the ends, or feels gummy when wet, extensions would add stress to already compromised strands. What to do: focus on a strengthening and bond-building routine for 2-3 months. We can recommend a protocol. Come back when your hair has regained integrity — the extensions will look and last much better.
Very fine or low-density hair
This isn't an automatic disqualifier, but it means we need to be strategic about method and placement. Fine hair can support extensions — but the wrong method or too much weight can cause traction stress. K-tips or a lighter weft row setup may be the right path. We'll tell you honestly at your consultation.
Scalp conditions
Active psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or significant scalp sensitivity can make extension installation uncomfortable and increase irritation. We recommend addressing scalp health first. Ask us — we can point you toward scalp treatments that help.
Recent heavy color damage
If you've recently bleached or lightened your hair and it's in a compromised state, we'll ask you to do a few strengthening treatments first. Color-treated hair can absolutely support extensions — but we need to verify the integrity is there before we add weight.
The Honest Bottom Line
We would rather tell you to wait three months and come back than install extensions that damage your hair or don't last. Our reputation is built on results — and that means doing things right, not just doing them fast.
