Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Color Technique is Right for You?

Confused about the difference between balayage and highlights? You're not alone. At Welcome & Wanted Hair Bar in Canton, we get asked this question constantly. Let's break down both techniques so you can walk into your next appointment knowing exactly what to request.
What Are Highlights?
Traditional highlights use foils to section off pieces of hair and lighten them from root to tip. This creates a uniform, all-over pattern of lighter pieces throughout your hair. Highlights give consistent, predictable results—you'll see lighter pieces throughout your entire head.
Highlights can be thick or thin (called chunky highlights or baby lights), and they can be placed close to the scalp or further down for a grown-out look. They're great if you want noticeable, even lightness and you don't mind regular touch-ups at the roots.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where your colorist literally paints lightener onto your hair, focusing on where the sun would naturally lighten it—mainly mid-lengths and ends, with face-framing pieces. The result looks more natural and lived-in, with softer transitions and no harsh lines.
Because balayage focuses on mid-lengths and ends rather than roots, it grows out beautifully. You can go 3-4 months (or longer) between appointments without obvious roots, making it lower-maintenance than traditional highlights.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose highlights if you want all-over lightness from root to tip, predictable uniform results, maximum brightness, and you don't mind more frequent touch-ups every 6-8 weeks.
Choose balayage if you want a sun-kissed natural look, lower maintenance with 12-16 week touch-ups, dimension and depth rather than all-over lightness, and a more modern lived-in vibe.
Can You Combine Both?
Absolutely! Many of our Canton clients get a hybrid—balayage throughout most of their hair with a few strategic highlights around the face for extra brightness. Our colorists are trained to customize your color to your exact goals.
