The Summer Balayage Refresh: When to Come Back In
You got your balayage done in May or June. It was beautiful. Now it's late July and something feels a little... off. Maybe it's looking a bit more orange than you'd like. Maybe the shine has faded. Maybe it just doesn't look as polished as it did walking out of the salon.
This is completely normal — and very fixable. Here's how to know when it's time for a mid-summer refresh, and what that appointment actually looks like.

Signs Your Balayage Needs a Refresh
You're noticing warmth or brassiness, especially at the mid-lengths
Your color looks dull or flat in photos — the dimension isn't showing up the way it used to
Your ends are feeling dry or looking slightly faded
You're more than 10-12 weeks out from your last color service
What a Mid-Summer Refresh Looks Like
For most clients, a summer refresh doesn't mean a full balayage repaint. It means one or more of the following:
Gloss or toning treatment: neutralizes brassiness, adds shine, refreshes the tone. This is the most common mid-summer service and it takes about an hour. The difference is dramatic.
Toner with a partial repaint: if some sections have faded more significantly, we might touch up specific pieces while adding a toner to the rest
Full balayage refresh: if it's been 5-6+ months or your color has shifted significantly, a full repaint gets you back to your ideal result
Your stylist will assess what you actually need — not the most expensive option, but the right one.
The Cost of Waiting
The longer you wait past the brassiness stage, the more work it takes to correct. A gloss at week 10 is easy and relatively affordable. Waiting until week 20 when the warmth has oxidized deeply into the hair means more lifting, more toning, more time. Staying on a consistent maintenance schedule actually saves you money over time.
